What is Collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and makes up about 75% of our skin’s weight. Naturally produced by the body, it acts like a “spring” that supports the skin’s layers, giving it elasticity, smoothness, and firmness.

Collagen plays a vital role not only in the skin but also in bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments, helping to hold the body’s structure together. There are over 20 types of collagen, with the most common being:

  1. Type I – Found in skin, bones, and tendons; provides structure and strength.

  2. Type II – Found in cartilage; supports joint flexibility.

  3. Type III – Found in skin, muscles, and blood vessels; helps maintain elasticity.

Skin health and collagen levels can be affected by both internal factors (ageing, hormonal changes, nutrition) and external factors (UV radiation, pollution). Studies show that collagen production begins to decline as early as age 20, and by age 60, the body may produce only 40% of its youthful levels.

This decline leads to structural breakdown of the dermis, resulting in wrinkles, sagging skin, pigmentation, and other visible signs of ageing. Supporting collagen through a healthy lifestyle, collagen-rich foods, or supplements can help maintain skin’s youthful look and overall body strength.
